Artist Wingyun Ander Yau

Biography

As an autodidact artist with a Bachelor of Sciences in Mathematical Sciences and background in software engineering, I am drawn to the interplay between structure and chaos. My work explores textures, patterns, and organic forms, spanning painting, photography, and printmaking. I am particularly captivated by the expressive potential of printmaking, where layering, fluid interactions, and experimental techniques create depth and movement.

My artistic journey began with oil landscapes inspired by travel photography, evolving into a fascination with printmaking techniques. Experimenting with screen-printing, monoprinting, and various chemical interactions led me to discover unique textural effects that bring a sculptural quality to my work.
The process itself—building, deconstructing, and reassembling elements—mirrors my interest in the unpredictable beauty of natural structures.

Recurring themes in my art include atmospheric landscapes and ephemeral moods in skyscapes, organic processes such as corrosion, ranging from realism to abstraction. I often merge traditional and contemporary methods, playing with calligraphy strokes, using printing residues as backdrops or manipulating textures to evoke emotional depth. Urban influences also appear in my work through street art-inspired illustrations and spontaneous expressions. My practice continues to evolve through collaboration and experimentation. Looking ahead, I am eager to explore ceramics, sculptural forms, and
expanded printmaking techniques to push the boundaries of texture and materiality further.
